A little background: I used to appear on Bill’s television program “Chasing News” as a regular panelist. I’d drive one or two days a week northbound on I-295 from my then-law office in Haddon Heights to the Duck Island exit. There, in a studio built inside of an industrial park warehouse, Chasing News aired its quirky spin on news coverage via My9 (and Phill’y Fox29 for a brief period) before the pandemic choked off the last of its advertising dollars and the program was cancelled.

In spring 2018, I appeared opposite Bill and two other panelists to discuss what was then a push to grant Garden State driver’s licenses to illegal aliens. Bill ultimately suggested during the segment that he opposed Murphy’s plan but not necessarily on the merits… because (and in this regard at least not unfairly) there were insufficient checks in place to ensure illegals wouldn’t be accidentally registered to vote.

“Just so you’re aware of my position on this, I’m a little more liberal than my conservative friends on it,” Spadea told my co-panelists, an immigration attorney, before promptly adding “I do believe in amnesty and a pathway to citizenship for people that want to be here, working hard, not criminals.”

Bill reiterated his supported for a pathway compromise later in the segment, stating “I can see it, I see a positive there,” and lamented that the driver’s license push could prove too divisive and derail progress towards a solution for migrants living in the country without legal status.

So again, after viewing this segment perhaps fore the first time, you can imagine my surprise when my friend of many years accused me of throwing him a curveball in front of thousands of debate viewers.

Bill tried to frame my question as species of hatchet job. The truth? I was giving him a good faith opportunity to explain himself, an opportunity of which he frankly should’ve availed himself if you believe the private and public polling which showed him entering the final stretch of this campaign running double-digits behind Ciattarelli, the Trump-endorsed candidate. Ciattarelli and Bramnick were given the same opportunity in almost identically formulated questions.

During both our ELEC debate with The New Jersey Globe (and the separate PBS one earlier in May), Bill insisted his pro-amnesty remarks were taken out of context and that, if the Chasing News segment aired by a pro-Ciattarelli Super PAC wasn’t cut, then we’d see that Bill was innocently referring to a specific question about visas.

“In that clip, I was asked a question as to whether or not a legal visa holder who had ran afoul of the system, and became undocumented, should they have a pathway, if they have no crime, they own a home, they are married with kids in school and paying their taxes, and I said absolutely,” Spadea complained after I posed my question.

“Nowhere, Matt, have I ever advocated a pathway to citizenship for illegal aliens. “

Bill Spadea did advocate a pathway to citizenship (more than once in the same segment), and the Chasing News panel (see above) featured a lively debate over the wisdom of illegal alien driver’s licenses; Bill’s full-throated support for amnesty was a voluntary pronouncement as opposed to a response to a specific question about visas.

You may agree with him! You may not.

My concern? He said what he said which is the point. As ever, I’m not telling you who to support. Never will. But when one candidate or campaign suggests I’m giving you anything other than the cold hard facts, friends, then I feel duty bound to make sure you are armed with everything you need to evaluate the situation. Republican gubernatorial candidate Bill Spadea publicly reaffirmed his long-standing support for a pathway to citizenship for undocumented immigrants during a Republican primary debate Wednesday night, aligning with moderate rival Jon Bramnick on the issue and sparking pushback from fellow contenders and conservative activists.

In a tense exchange Tuesday night, Bramnick argued that immigrants who have lived in the United States for decades should have a means to gain legal status.

“People [have] been here 25 years – why isn’t there a path to citizenship?” Bramnick said. Spadea replied, “Actually, Jon, I agree with you on that, and that’s the ad Ciattarelli’s lying about – because he cut the question I was asked.”

Ciattarelli confirmed that as governor, he would work with the Trump administration’s policies on illegal migrants and cooperate with the federal government on matters of illegal immigration.

Spadea clarified that his position refers to immigrants who entered legally but later fell out of legal status, for overstaying visas or other legal troubles that might have conflicted with their legal status.

“Here’s the question – if you were here legally on a visa but you ran afoul of our system, should you have a pathway – and of course my answer is yes,” Spadea said during a moment of crosstalk.

Spadea also faced criticism from debate participants for disputing past accusations made by fellow candidate Jack Ciattarelli, who had cited Spadea’s past remarks as evidence of support for amnesty.

Background on Spadea’s immigration stance

Spadea’s comments on the debate stage are consistent with positions he has publicly taken for over two decades.

In 2004, he first endorsed some form of amnesty for undocumented immigrants. Throughout the Trump administration, Spadea maintained his view on his radio and television platforms, frequently arguing for leniency toward visa overstays.

In previous interviews and policy statements, Spadea suggested that Republicans should consider offering a path to legal status in exchange for other border security measures.

He dismissed the feasibility of mass deportations, calling such efforts a “fantasy.”

President Donald J. Trump is currently making Spadea’s ‘fantasy’ a reality, deporting hundreds of thousands of criminal migrants who have run afoul with the legal process since taking office in January.

TOMS RIVER, NJ – One New Jersey candidate will be victorious in June whether or not he wins the GOP primary election for governor.

Spadea is now being accused of being a ‘bad actor’ by his opponents as records on file with the New Jersey Election Law Enforcement Commission show that he is laundering public campaign funding into an LLC bearing his name.

The candidate’s latest P2 reports show Spadea’s Common Sense Club PAC and his own campaign making dozens and dozens of payments worth hundreds of thousands of dollars to Bill Spadea.Com LLC.

Spadea paid himself as much as $6,000 per week through his campaign some weeks.

Bill Spadea, a prominent Republican candidate for New Jersey governor and former radio host, has come under fire after revelations that he allegedly paid himself over $250,000 from political donations during his campaign efforts.

During our investigation, we found state election records filed by Spadea’s campaign that showed over $100,000 in personal payments, but his opponent, Jack Ciattarelli’s campaign claims that figure is higher than $250,000 when you factor in all of the other financial reimbursements Spadea has noted in his New Jersey ELEC filings.

The disclosure, which surfaced during a recent GOP primary debate, has sparked accusations of financial impropriety and raised questions about the ethics of his fundraising practices as he vies to succeed Governor Phil Murphy in the 2025 election.

Spadea, known for his outspoken conservative commentary on New Jersey 101.5 before stepping down to focus on his gubernatorial bid, has defended the payments, arguing they were necessary to cover personal expenses while he dedicated himself full-time to political organizing.

Running a campaign is a business according to Spadea

“Running a campaign is like running a business,” Spadea said in response to critics. “I’ve been transparent about this from the start, and I’m still owed more for the work I’ve put in.”

He compared his actions to those of entrepreneurs who draw salaries from their ventures, framing the payments as legitimate compensation for his efforts.

IRS records show Spadea taking campaign salary

The controversy erupted when rival candidate Jack Ciattarelli, a former Assemblyman, pointed to an IRS filing from Spadea’s political action committee, Elect Common Sense, during a debate at Rider University earlier this year. The document, publicly available, shows Spadea received $65,000 from donor contributions.

“He didn’t disclose that when he was soliciting donations from hardworking people,” Ciattarelli charged, accusing Spadea of “double-dipping” by drawing income from both his radio gig and campaign funds before resigning from the station.

Critics call out Spadea’s “Grift”

Critics have seized on the revelation, with some labeling it as an example of “grifting” off small-dollar donors, many of whom are Trump supporters from across the country.

Reports earlier this year highlighted confusion among some out-of-state contributors, several of whom told media outlets they were unaware their recurring donations—processed through the WinRed platform—were going to Spadea’s campaign rather than directly to Donald Trump’s efforts.

Spadea’s campaign has dismissed these claims, with manager Mike Hahn asserting that the candidate’s “pro-Trump, conservative message” resonates nationally, driving voluntary support.

The campaign said they were free to use Trump and his wife Melania’s name in their fundraising efforts, even though a large sum of that money was not going to conservative efforts, but directly into the candidate’s pockets.

Spadea’s integrity called out by opponents

His opponents, including Ciattarelli and State Senator Jon Bramnick, have used the issue to question his integrity, with Ciattarelli arguing it undermines Spadea’s outsider persona. “

He’s been part of the system, taking money from donors to pad his own pockets,” Ciattarelli said during the debate.

Is it legal?

New Jersey election law permits candidates to pay themselves from campaign funds for reasonable expenses, provided the payments are disclosed and deemed necessary for campaign activities.

Spadea’s campaign insists the salary complies with these regulations, noting that he reported the income in required filings.

However, political watchdogs argue the practice, while legal, risks eroding donor trust, especially when not explicitly communicated during fundraising appeals.

As the June primary approaches, the controversy threatens to overshadow Spadea’s policy platform, which includes slashing the state budget, ending energy mandates, and reversing sanctuary state policies.

With $16.8 million in public matching funds already distributed among candidates, Spadea has qualified for the program after raising over $580,000 from private donors—a milestone he touts as evidence of broad support.

Yet, the questions surrounding his financial decisions could complicate his bid to unify the GOP base, particularly among voters wary of establishment tactics.

Candidates – like cars – can be total lemons. Some lemons have significant, unfixable defects or unrepairable issues. This year is too important to pick a lemon (like Bill Spadea) as our Republican nominee for Governor.

Here are some friendly tips on how to tell a candidate is a lemon:

They’re inconsistent: Cars that drift all over the road are lemons. What about a candidate? Does the candidate move from one side of an issue to another?

• For example: Bill Spadea says supported Trump since the escalator, but he abandoned Trump in 2021. Spadea wanted Trump to resign in shame! And then Spadea spent the last four years calling Trump a failure, calling on Trump to step aside for Ron DeSantis, and telling Republicans to move on because Trump’s time had passed.

They have a long record of failure – have they been around for a while? Have they been unsuccessful?

• Bill Spadea, for example, has been running for office for decades – getting absolutely smoked in 2004, and losing so badly in 2012 that even his hometown opposed him. In fact, Spadea’s track record in campaigns is so bad he was named “The Biggest Loser of 2023” after 60% of his candidates lost. Spadea’s fundraising outfits claim they support conservative causes, but only 7% actually went to supporting candidates. It’s truly impressive.

  

• They’re not trustworthy – a lemon is a car that isn’t as reliable as it appears, and a lemon candidate is just the same.

  • Like Bill Spadea – Spadea talks tough on immigration but has been calling for amnesty for illegal immigrants for 20 years – in the newspaper, on TV, on the radio, you name it. Spadea even thinks deporting illegal immigrants is a “fantasy” and was willing to abandon a physical border wall in exchange for a pathway to citizenship for illegal immigrants.

Now that you know how to spot a lemon… don’t be fooled by defective, unrepairable, unreliable candidates like Bill Spadea. You just can’t trust Bill Spadea.

Bill Spadea loves to talk about his fundraising operation. So let’s hear from Spadea’s donors - many of whom were listed as retirees and as living outside of New Jersey, and some who had no idea they were donating to him.

Margaret McLendon, a retiree from Georgia, didn’t recall ever hearing the name Bill Spadea, a Republican candidate for governor in New Jersey.

Similarly, Laurie Daiger, a 73-year-old who lives in Washington state, was confused when asked why she donated 20-plus times over the last year — an aggregate of more than $1,000 — to Elect Common Sense, a PAC closely associated with Spadea. She only remembered donating to President Donald Trump’s campaign, not the New Jersey-based group that she had never heard of.

Spadea’s tactics prey on loyal, committed supporters who want to help President Trump.

No doubt Spadea didn’t mention that he’s used donor money to pay himself a $65,000 salary, or that only 7% of the money donated to help Spadea support Republicans candidates actually made it to those down ballot campaigns.

The bottom line: We just can’t trust Shady Bill Spadea.

The Democrats running for Governor all pledged to make protecting illegal immigrants their goal…

It's nuts. Even worse-- Bill Spadea agreed with the far left Democrats and supported amnesty and a pathway to citizenship for illegals, repeatedly. Spadea admits he’s more liberal than his conservative friends on immigration.

Bill Spadea, a prominent former New Jersey radio host and conservative commentator, is under fire for his views on immigration, which diverge from the hardline policies of President Donald Trump. The controversy has been amplified by a series of attack ads funded by Kitchen Table Conservatives.

Spadea, the host of a popular morning show on NJ 101.5, has long taken a more moderate position on immigration compared to Trump’s strict enforcement policies. [Spadea] has publicly expressed support for a pathway to citizenship and amnesty for undocumented immigrants, a stance at odds with Trump’s call for mass deportations.

In the ads, Spadea’s comments were juxtaposed with the president’s immigration policies, painting [Spadea] as out of step with conservative values. “Finally we have a president committed to securing our border, yet Bill Spadea thinks we should let millions of illegals in,” the ad stated, using clips of Spadea saying, “I do believe in amnesty and a pathway to citizenship.”

Spadea’s position includes advocating for a plan to allow undocumented immigrants currently residing in the U.S. to remain legally and eventually gain citizenship. “It is time that we talk about a pathway to citizenship for people who are here and they are undocumented,” Spadea said during a prior broadcast, adding that his views are “a little more liberal” than those of many of his conservative peers.

“I believe in a pathway to citizenship,” Spadea said of illegal aliens.

“President Trump begins the work of securing our border. He deserves a Governor he can work with – and that’s just not Bill Spadea. Spadea’s admitted he’s on the wrong side of the issue – and it hasn’t stopped him from repeatedly and consistently calling for amnesty for illegal immigrants,” Kitchen Table Conservatives said in a statement today. “Spadea cannot be trusted to work with President Trump to keep our families safe.”

The ads have sparked debate among New Jersey conservatives, with some defending Spadea’s pragmatism and others condemning his stance as incompatible with the broader GOP platform. The backlash highlights the ongoing divide within the Republican Party over immigration policy, particularly in states like New Jersey, where conservative values often compete with a more moderate electorate.

Spadea announced this week that he was taking a leave of absence from his daily radio show to focus on his campaign for governor.

Spadea’s been exposed as a phony on policies – with conservative blog Save Jersey saying “Spadea has changed his position on illegal aliens in New Jersey”

And the New Jersey Globe highlights that “Spadea has not always been as rigidly supportive of deportation policies” – even playing a video of Spadea calling for amnesty for illegal immigrants.

Spadea’s shapeshifting positions on core conservative values and on President Trump’s record of success are catching up to him, too:

Just this week, conservative activists are concluding Spadea’s full of it and announcing that there is “No clear authentic MAGA candidate in N.J. GOP gubernatorial primary”

Even the media is coming around – with POLITICO reporting Spadea can’t claim to be unwavering in his support for Trump - calling attention to how Spadea said Trump shouldn’t run in 2024.

And NJ Spotlight shines a … spotlight… on how Spadea called the Trump Presidency a failure.

Incredibly - just this morning, Bill Spadea came out against having a flag at official government meetings. Spadea says this government censorship isn’t a real issue - he called it a distraction, and attacks concerned citizens fighting back as “cowards” and “so called patriots” who are “picking on a bunch of council members.” Listen for yourself.

It’s just more B.S. from Bill Spadea.

Trump did it in spite of armchair quarterbacks like talk show host Bill Spadea.

Since 2020, Bill Spadea attacked Trump repeatedly:

After the 2020 elections, Spadea announced that he thought “Trump failed – his presidency was a failure.”

Spadea doubled down, declaring: “I’m not here to fight for Trump… I blame Trump. Donald Trump is part of the problem.”

Spadea even wanted to replace Trump.

Spadea used his talk show to urge Trump not to run for president, and endorsing Ron DeSantis instead, even saying Trump isn’t normal:

“I know a lot of you are huge Trump fans – I do not want him to run again – I think it is time for new blood. It’s time for Governors like Ron DeSantis, governors like Kristi Noem to be a voice for normal…”

Spadea was consistent - even saying in November 2023, during the Presidential primary, that voters should “forget your position on Donald Trump now - but he failed.”

Spadea might be singing a different tune now that he’s running for Governor - but when Trump needed Republicans to pull together and fight the Biden-Harris agenda, Spadea insisted on attacking Trump repeatedly.

As New Jersey conservatives look towards building on Trump’s 2024 successes in the 2025 elections, our advice is: Turn the page on phony talk radio host Bill Spadea.

That’s right – the last four years. So while Spadea attacks people for their opinions from ten years ago… maybe he could explain to us why he’s attacked Trump as recently as November.

Before Trump had left the White House, Spadea called said Trump was “beaten… tired… would have been better off resigning the office in shame.”

And in the three years Biden and Harris have run our country into the ground, Spadea has been there to remind people “Trump was part of the problem” – that Trump’s “time had passed” and that “I know a lot of you are huge Trump fans. I do not want President Trump to run again. I think it is time for new blood. It's time for governors like Ron DeSantis, governors like Kristi Noem”

And as Ron DeSantis challenged Trump for the GOP nomination, Spadea reminded people “I've said this over and over again now, forget about your position on Donald Trump now, but he failed.”

If that’s what Spadea calls loyalty… it makes sense that his initials are BS.

PHONY FINANCIAL SUPPORT

Spadea’s Common Sense network – established to bring “campaign support directly to the candidates” – has been an abject failure. Quarter after quarter, reports show Spadea contributes “a tiny percentage of its earning to actual candidates and campaigns.”

So where did the money go? Spadea paid himself a 65,000 salary, taking up 25% of what was raised by the Common Sense Club in 2022. No wonder the Common Sense efforts have been an…

AN ELECTORAL FAILURE

If there’s one thing Bill Spadea knows, it’s how to lose. Forget his two failed campaigns – which he lost by landslides. His track record in picking candidates is abysmal. Just this primary, Spadea endorsed controversial Mayor Dominick Cuozzo – who got clobbered, losing almost 2:1.

Last fall, Spadea’s candidates only won 40% of the time – no thanks to Spadea’s lack of financial support.

In the 2023 primary, Spadea backed four candidates – and three of them lost. And who could forget 2022, where every candidate Spadea spotlighted for Congress in NJ went on to lose. 

This much is clear:

Bill Spadea is a phony. Over the last few years, Spadea has consistently attacked President Trump.

Spadea’s a failure - raising money to support conservative candidates, but using it to promote himself.

And Spadea’s a loser - he’s lost the overwhelming majority of campaigns that he’s been involved in.

With a record like his, Bill Spadea is doomed to fail – again. We can’t trust Bill Spadea to fight for us.  

But don’t be fooled - you should be aware that Spadea’s candidacy is a nightmare for conservatives: Spadea turned his back on President Trump in January of 2021, and continued to attack Trump just a few months ago. Spadea’s “fundraising” hasn’t benefitted conservatives - it’s benefitted Spadea personally. And Spadea wants to see President Trump’s Republican Party go extinct - even working with Democrats as they used lawfare to remove a local Republican Party chairman.

The truth is: Bill Spadea isn’t a real conservative - he’s just a phony radio talk show host and political opportunist.

As Republicans reeled after the 2020 elections, Spadea was quick to abandon ship. Spadea declared Trump a failure on January 14, 2021! Spadea continued to criticise President Trump throughout Biden’s presidency - even saying Trump shouldn’t run for President in 2024 because it was time for “new blood.” As President Trump campaigned in Iowa last winter, Spadea doubled down, saying "forget about your position on President Trump now, but he failed."

The proof Spadea’s in this for himself? Let’s look at his fundraising operation - the one that “spent about 99.7 percent of its expenses on stuff other than helping candidates.” What did Spadea spend the money he raised for conservatives on? Well, Spadea’s groups paid him a handsome $65,000 salary, while “donating just a tiny percentage of its earnings to actual candidates and campaigns.”

And if that’s not bad enough, Spadea wants to bury the Republican Party. He thinks the Trump’s GOP should go the way of the Whigs - that is, extinct. And he’s partnered with Democrats who used tried to pass a law to remove a local GOP party chairman.

As the Spadea for Governor operation spins up, taking radio interviews out of context, claiming a track record of success - the truth is: Bill Spadea isn’t a real conservative. He’s just a phony radio talk show host and political opportunist.
